Book Review: A Shade of Vampire

On the evening of Sofia Claremont's seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.

A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.

She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.
An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.

Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.

Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.

Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?

A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was generously been given an e-copy of the book by the author to read and review.

A Shade of Vampire is about an ordinary human girl, Sofia who, on her birthday was taken captive by vampires and brought to a world she never thought existed. She’s forced to be a slave to one of the most powerful vampires living and there she’ll find out how truly terrifying and dark it is to always be at the mercy of bloodthirsty vampires who wouldn’t think twice of sucking her blood dry.

A Shade of Vampire is one of those books that you’d finish in one sitting not because it’s short (although it is) but more so because it was bloody brilliant.
A Shade of Vampire doesn’t exactly give a whole new “look” at vampires. They burn when exposed to sunlight, they have superstrength and such, they suck blood and craves for it everytime – you know, the usual. But what sets this book apart is the way it was written. It has just the right pace, the thrill and mystery and the hot romance that would certainly make you want it.

Ms. Bella was very good with words. She told the story with such clarity and vividness that would make you feel like you’re there. I love how everything unfolded and took its time. It wasn’t rushed or forced and there wasn’t a moment that I felt bored and felt like I have to stop reading.

I loved reading the whole thing – the plot with its own uniqueness and the characters with their own personality and filled with gusto. And the romance between Derek and Sofia, oh the romance! It was slow and sweet and passionate. I love how it felt so sincere and heartbreaking and just so... romantic. They didn’t even have to kiss for me to feel tingles!

A Shade of Vampire was everything I hoped it would be. I just hope it was longer (so I can have more Derek-and-Sofia moments) and that it didn’t end with so huge a cliffhanger! Not to mention, there’s still so much we don’t know and I would very much want to see Lucas dead. Ugh, he makes my blood boil, how can he be so cruel and heartless?!
Now I would want the next book so badly and would constantly check the internet for news about it. I don’t know what else to say other than A Shade of Vampire is a book I would very much recommend (I need to gush and squeal about it with someone – it was really good!).

QUOTES:

“You’re just standing there,” he retorted.
I shrugged. “I have nowhere to go, do I?”

“Why are you not afraid of me?” He began to draw closer.

I wanted to run – the same way I should have when Lucas first approached me at the beach.
“What on earth makes you think I’m not afraid of you?”

‘In the middle of his performance, it dawned on me that it was exactly the effect Derek Novak had on me: he always managed – in one way or another – to take my breath away.’
