About the book:
Kit Sweetly slays sexism, bad bosses, and bad luck to become a knight at a medieval-themed restaurant.
Working as a wench―i.e. waitress―at a cheesy medieval-themed restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, Kit Sweetly dreams of being a knight like her brother. She has the moves, is capable on a horse, and desperately needs the raise that comes with knighthood, so she can help her mom pay the mortgage and hold a spot at her dream college.
Company policy allows only guys to be knights. So when Kit takes her brother’s place and reveals her identity at the end of the show, she rockets into internet fame and a whole lot of trouble with the management. But the Girl Knight won’t go down without a fight. As other wenches join her quest, a protest forms. In a joust before Castle executives, they’ll prove that gender restrictions should stay medieval―if they don’t get fired first.
First off, that has got to be my top favorite book cover ever. I LOVE staring at it. The colors. Kit. Standing there all badass. And Jett. Looking all charming and lovable. Look. At. It. It's gorgeous. It's so refreshing to look at. And I don't know why but it just makes me happy whenever I look at it. Is that weird?
Anyway... I am in so much awe for this adorable, hilarious, smart and heartwarming feminist-to-its-core YA debut. With a heroine that's full of sass, wit and bravery, a group of characters you can't help but love and an enchanting, hilarious, smart storytelling, this is a definite must-read.
I have to say the highlight of my reading experience was being in the Castle. It was so much fun and exciting and I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to be surrounded by medieval knights and squires and wenches and eat a whole tub of turkey legs to my heart's content. It wouldn't hurt to be a part of the gang too. I would LOVE to be Kit's bff. She was fiercely smart and funny and strong-willed. Seeing her take on the patriarchial corporate world was nothing short of amazing. I adore Chris as well. He's pretty cool for a big brother. See, this is what we need more of in the YA world. Healthy sibling relationship. There's honestly nothing quite like it. And the romance? That was probably the most slowburn, forbidden (kind of?) romance I've ever come across. I want my own pancake date with my own Jett.
The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly put the biggest smile on my face. I'm not very good at writing reviews so I most probably did nothing to convince you to read this, but PLEASE DO.
Fly, you fool!
'Tell me I can't and then watch me do it.'
'Once he's gone, I look up. Far above us, almost hidden by the light pollution of the suburbs, the stars wink their centuries-old message. I could be seeing light from stars that burned out during the Middle Ages. Light that's been racing for seven hundred years across the galaxy to shine for a moment on me.
That's a heavy thought. That we're just the souls of stars in exile, as Plato says. Or that some girl might be alone on a night seven hundred years from now, waiting for a sign from of the universe. And all she's got is starlight from tonight.'
'What must it be like to have that sort of clarity in your own life as a teenager? I mean, I have my Big Plan. And my lists. But it's not quite so unswerving as an edict from saints and divine powers.'
"Pancakes? Is that some bizarre code for realizing your true feelings for each other?"
