My first book by Lisa Roberts and I'm so happy to say that it did not disappoint!
There's a reason I love young adult contemporaries above all else. And I think this book is exactly why. It was a fluffy, romantic and very entertaining read. With a sassy heroine and totally swoony hero, what more could I ask for?
I admit I disliked Trina in the beginning. She came off too judgmental and kind of bitchy. I know no one has ever lived without suffering through the social hierarchy of highschool but it seemed to me like Trina put everyone else below her and it annoyed me a bit. Fortunately, my dislike of her was short-lived. After further reading, I realized what a great character she is. She's very relateable and authentic. There were times where I could definitely see myself in her. Like Trina, I am goal-driven and I go nuts when faced with disorganization. Not to mention I'm also afraid of heights. She's also a bit awkward especially when faced with the unexpected and that always leads to a lot of laughter.
I love the transition that took place between Trina and Slade. They were polar opposites and clearly disliked each other. But they went from enemies to friends and eventually to something more. And don't I just love it when relationships take time to develop?
But the best part about Playing the Player? SLADE. I fell in love with him from the first moment I met him but I fell in love EVEN MORE when he did that thing with Trina (I'd keep it vague to avoid spoilers but you'll know what I'm talking about when you get there) and when I saw how great he is with little kids. (Gilly and Max were adorable!) And I love his quick wit and sarcasm which never failed to make me laugh.
I also like Slade's friendship with Alex. It felt genuine and although seemed quite cliche, I enjoyed every bit of their interactions.
While Playing the Player was predictable for the most part, the author did a great job on the writing and in developing the characters. I love the romance, the humor and the happy, light feelings it evoked.
