Review: THE JASMINE THRONE (Burning Kingdoms #1) by Tasha Suri

THE JASMINE THRONE (Burning Kingdoms #1)
Date Published: June 8, 2021; Orbit

From Goodreads:
Author of Empire of Sand and Realm of Ash Tasha Suri's The Jasmine Throne, beginning a new trilogy set in a world inspired by the history and epics of India, in which a captive princess and a maidservant in possession of forbidden magic become unlikely allies on a dark journey to save their empire from the princess's traitor brother.

Imprisoned by her dictator brother, Malini spends her days in isolation in the Hirana: an ancient temple that was once the source of the powerful, magical deathless waters — but is now little more than a decaying ruin.

Priya is a maidservant, one among several who make the treacherous journey to the top of the Hirana every night to clean Malini’s chambers. She is happy to be an anonymous drudge, so long as it keeps anyone from guessing the dangerous secret she hides.

But when Malini accidentally bears witness to Priya’s true nature, their destinies become irrevocably tangled. One is a vengeful princess seeking to depose her brother from his throne. The other is a priestess seeking to find her family. Together, they will change the fate of an empire.

Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

This is my very first Tasha Suri book (and it will definitely not be the last).

I'll admit it was a slow and rough start for me. It only picked up pace after about a hundred pages. And from there I had no choice but to get lost in this brutal yet enchanting world Tasha Suri created.

The Jasmine Throne boasts an intricate weaving of storyline inspired by Indian myths and history. It chronicles the journey of a cast of characters finding their strength and power, and their own place in a world that would rather see them fail and oppressed. The characters' journeys and actions are evidently influenced and interwoven with faith, religion and their people's history.

Priya has my heart. Here is an MC who will strive to do what needs to be done for her people and her country. She will put them before her own happiness. She will sacrifice herself along the way if need be. I love Priya's gentle and yet powerful nature. She's loyal to her core and she cares so deeply. Have I mentioned I love her?!

I'm definitely most looking forward to Malini's journey. I have a feeling it won't be an easy one. I just know it's bound to be heartbreaking and epic. I really, really need book two.

With an Indian-inspired fantasy world, a swoony slowburn enemies to lovers f/f romance, character-driven plotlines and an unforgettable journey of revenge, revolution and power, The Jasmine Throne is not to be missed!
