by Emma Mills
Release Date: January 14, 2020; Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)
About the book:
With the warmth, wit, intimate friendships, and heart-melting romance she brings to all her books, Emma Mills crafts a story about believing in yourself, owning your mistakes, and trusting in human connection in Lucky Caller.
When Nina decides to take a radio broadcasting class her senior year, she expects it to be a walk in the park. Instead, it’s a complete disaster.
The members of Nina's haphazardly formed radio team have approximately nothing in common. And to maximize the awkwardness her group includes Jamie, a childhood friend she'd hoped to basically avoid for the rest of her life.
The show is a mess, internet rumors threaten to bring the wrath of two fandoms down on their heads, and to top it all off Nina's family is on the brink of some major upheaval.
Everything feels like it's spiraling out of control―but maybe control is overrated?
Rating: 4 of 5 stars
Lucky Caller started out a bit off for me. For the first few chapters, it didn't feel like I'm reading an Emma Mills book. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, no. Just different I think? The tweet by the author about this book maybe being like her TS Reputation era? It felt exactly like that.
Amidst that rough beginning though, I ended up feeling exactly what I always feel after reading an Emma Mills book... filled with so much FEELS I don't know what to do with.
This might have felt a bit different from the author's previous books, but Lucky Caller didn't miss out on Mills' signature wit, charm and swoon. The writing was just pure magic. And can I just say, Mills is a master at creating fictional games. I want to take part in every one of them.
Also? Mills writes the most adorable, lovable bunch of characters you'll ever meet. Jamie is one of those people you can always count on. Someone who is naturally loyal to a fault. He's honestly the most genuine, lovable person I've met. I seriously can't not fall in love with him. And trust me, you'll feel the same way too. Joydeep had his moments. That bro thing? Love it! He was such a wonderful surprise. Sidney has to be my favorite sister. She's just so adorably innocent. I connected most with Rose though. I empathized most with her.
I got chills. Literal CHILLS reading this. My heart is so full. Such a wonderfully sweet, heartwarming must-read for all!
I received an e-arc via Edelweiss+ to read and review.
