ARC Review: SERPENT & DOVE (Serpent & Dove #1) by Shelby Mahurin

SERPENT & DOVE (Serpent & Dove #1)
by Shelby Mahurin
Release Date: September 3, 2019; HarperTeen

About the book:
Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou's, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou's most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

I don't know why but I fully expected this to be a standalone. Suffice it to say, I'm so happy it's not.

Serpent & Dove was everything I hoped it to be. The addictive writing, the forbidden romance, the complex characters and the incredibly alluring, dark and bloody world... it was AMAZING.

The author created a world governed by religion and magic. One side against the other in an unending war. It was bloody and brutal and I loved every second of it. I would have wanted a more fleshed out world building though. I feel like we barely scratched the surface about the witches, the Chasseurs and Louise's past and there's so much more to uncover. Considering there's a sequel, I think it's safe to assume I'm right.

Louise is a magnificent heroine. I love how she's fierce and crass and stubborn and yet vulnerable, loyal and selfless. I loved her from the start! Reid was no different. I just found my new book boyfriend ya'll. I am IN LOVE. Every scene shared by these two I savored completely. The banter! The subtle, slowburn (although not as slowburn as what I would've preferred) romance! Lou and Reid are too damn adorable and I LOVED it.

I feel like I should say something about Morgane. I hate her guts and can I please wring her neck myself? She was barely in the book but what little there was of her I completely abhor. Since she's a villain, that's... good, right? Also, can I just say I love, love, love Coco and Beau! There's something about these two and I hope we'll see some development in the sequel. Please tell me there's something there and I'm not just imagining it.

If you're into Wicked Saints by Emily Duncan (like I am) then this book will definitely appeal to you. Can't wait for the sequel!

I received an e-arc via Edelweiss+ to read and review.
