Title: LOVE, LUCY
Author: April Lindner
Release date: January 27, 2015
Publisher: Poppy
Pages: 304
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
While backpacking through Florence, Italy, during the summer before she heads off to college, Lucy Sommersworth finds herself falling in love with the culture, the architecture, the food...and Jesse Palladino, a handsome street musician. After a whirlwind romance, Lucy returns home, determined to move on from her "vacation flirtation." But just because summer is over doesn't mean Lucy and Jesse are over, too.

In this coming-of-age romance, April Lindner perfectly captures the highs and lows of a summer love that might just be meant to last beyond the season.

About April Lindner

April Lindner is the author of three novels: Catherine, a modernization of Wuthering Heights; Jane, an update of Jane Eyre; and Love, Lucy, releasing January 27, 2015. She also has published two poetry collections, Skin and This Bed Our Bodies Shaped. She plays acoustic guitar badly, sees more rock concerts than she’d care to admit, travels whenever she can, cooks Italian food, and lavishes attention on her pets—two Labrador retriever mixes and two excitable guinea pigs. A professor of English at Saint Joseph’s University, April lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and two sons.

The Guest Post

SOME RULES OF THE ROAD

Like Lucy Sommersworth, the heroine of Love, Lucy, my parents gave me the gift of a lifetime: a backpacking trip to Europe. I was a bit older than Lucy—22, and just out of college—but when I arrived in Milan, Italy with a Eurail pass, a copy of Let’s Go: Europe, and a seventy-pound backpack I could barely lift, I was a wee bit terrified. Like Lucy, I spoke only a little bit of Italian, just barely enough to get by, and I wasn’t particularly good at reading maps or train schedules. Unlike Lucy, I was travelling solo.

Luckily, my journey began with training wheels. I’d just taken a college Italian class, and my professor had offered a safe crash pad for the first few days of my trip—in her family home in the Alps. Less luckily, when I reached Malpensa airport, nobody was there to pick me up. Giddy with excitement and jet lag, I wandered around the airport, eavesdropping on Italians as they hugged each other hello and goodbye, and had noisy arguments. I’d never felt more alone in my life. Where would I sleep that night if my ride didn’t show up?

Luckily, my professor’s brother arrived at last to whisk me away to the family home in Domodossola. The extended family welcomed and fed me, gave me tours of their city with its charming medieval center, helped me practice my Italian, and, when the time was right, brought me to the train station where my solo travels began for real. It was time to take off the training wheels.

If I’d felt alone back in the airport, I was even more so on that train to Verona, a city where I didn’t know a soul. In those pre-internet days, I could disappear into thin air and nobody would even notice I was gone. The thought was chilling, but oddly exciting.

By nightfall, I’d made it to Verona. I’d figured out the public transportation, found a youth hostel, and booked myself a bed. Best of all, I had introduced myself to a handful of other backpackers. We hung out together in the hostel’s common area, sharing bread and cheese, exchanging stories, discussing the rules of the road—those bits of practical wisdom our travels were teaching us. Here are a few.

Time passes differently on the road.  Spend a few very intense hours seeing the sites with strangers and by the end of the day, those strangers have become a part of your story. Years later you’ll see their faces in your photo album and still remember stray details of the adventures you shared together, even if you can’t quite recall their names.

Spontaneity is key.  There are few things as magical as showing up at a train station with no idea where you’re headed next, picking a random train, and hopping on.

Janis Joplin said it best: Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.  When you’re carrying all your possessions on your back in a city where you don’t know a soul, you’re absolutely free. You can go anywhere, do anything. That freedom has its lonely moments—but it can be the doorway to all kinds of adventures.

Embrace misadventure.  As carefully as you plan there will be crazy mistakes: wrong turns, slept-through train stops, multilingual misunderstandings, and all kinds of other blunders—and these will make the best stories. My misadventures are some of my favorite memories. The time I missed curfew and had to climb into my hostel through a second-story window. The morning when, hanging out my recently washed clothes to dry, I dropped my wet underthings out the window, onto a stranger’s head. The night when, with no room to stay in, I slept on Venice’s train station steps with about a hundred other backpackers, the stars above us and the Grand Canal stretched out before us.

Would I trade that last memory for a safe, comfy night in an actual bed?  Not on your life.

Until a month ago, eighteen-year-old Ven had never set foot outside the windowless warehouse where she was created. An Imitation of Raven Rogen, Ven spent her days confined in the lab, studying videos of her Authentic, all so she could step into Raven’s life at a moment’s notice.
Now, Ven lives in Raven’s penthouse apartment, kisses Raven’s boyfriend, and obeys every order from Raven’s dad, Titus Rogen—the very man who created her. But Ven has a secret plan. She doesn’t want Raven’s life. She wants her own.

In the action-packed sequel of Imitation, Ven wages a dangerous war against Titus. First she’ll free herself, then she’ll free every last Imitation. . . .

BOOK REVIEW:
Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Where do I start? After reading and not being quite satisfied with the ending of the first book, I was very excited and full of high expectations for Deviation. And I'm so glad to say the book did not disappoint.

I have always admired Ven's strength. Even though she struggles with being who she really is versus who and what she's expected to be, she's very determined to do whatever it takes to do what she believes is right. She's loyal to her friends and even if sometimes she makes rash decisions that make me want to shake her, I love how selfless and caring she is. She was never the kind of girl to put herself before others which is very admirable. Although I would have loved to see more of Ven being a kickass in this book and showing Titus who's boss because I felt like for the most part nothing really action-y happened. Good thing there were some twists and turns that the story took that were enough to keep the plot moving and keep me on edge.

If I just said that the book was really good, would that be enough to convince you to start the series? Because honestly I'm coming up empty on what to say about Deviation. I do love seeing Linc and Ven's relationship grow. Linc has always been protective, patient, gentle and caring with Ven and that still hasn't changed. Also, Ven grew a lot in this book. It's evident in the choices she make and the actions she take.
And as far as evil villains go, Titus is one wicked, selfish and despicable man.

There's a lot of conspiracy, intrigue and mystery that surround this book that would keep you turning the pages. Oh and how could I forget. Huge cliffhanger in the end!
I cannot wait for the third book to come out and fall into my hands! <3

Haven't started the Clone Chronicles yet?
Start it out with IMITATION (Clone Chronicles #1)!

Everyone is exactly like me. There is no one like me.
Ven wrestles with these contradicting truths every day. A clone of wealthy eighteen-year-old Raven Rogen, Ven knows everything about the girl she was created to serve: the clothes she wears, the boys she loves, the friends she loves to hate. Yet she’s never met the Authentic Raven face-to-face. Imitations like Ven only get to leave the lab when they’re needed—to replace a dead Authentic, donate an organ, or complete a specific mission. And Raven has never needed Ven . . . until now.

When there is an attack on Raven’s life, Ven is thrust into the real world, posing as Raven to draw out the people who tried to harm her. But as Ven dives deeper into Raven’s world, she begins to question everything she was ever told. She exists for Raven, but is she prepared to sacrifice herself for a girl she’s never met?
Fans of Cinder, The Selection and Sara Shepard’s Lying Game series will love Imitation, a thrilling, action-packed novel sure to keep readers guessing until the very last page.

BOOK REVIEW:
Rating: 3 of 5 stars
Imitation reminded me a lot of Stacey Kade's The Rules. It's actually one of the three reasons why I decided to read the book. The other two would be because of that gorgeous cover and of course, it's written by Heather Hildenbrand. HEATHER HILDENBRAND.

Ven is an Imitation. Basically she's a clone made solely for the purpose of taking the place of her Authentic, Raven Rogen, whenever the need arises. She's made, raised and trained to be an exact replica of Raven. I found this idea really fascinating. Ven is fully aware of what her purpose is. From the start she knows what and who she is. She's a product that only obeys and has no right to be anything else other than what she's told to be. She knows she's not human and incapable of feeling emotions because that is what she's been led to believe but when she's thrown into the outside world to live her Authentic's life, everything she's ever known and believed in is questioned and shaken.
Ven is an amazing character. I like her tenacity and her willingness to take risks for the good of everyone. She's caring and kind. And although she's not great at making sound decisions, her determination to figure out what's going on is admirable.

Imitation is a brilliant book. It's not exactly unique but the author made it her own and gave it a different spin. I love the mystery and intrigue that was present throughout. Also, although I'm not a huge fan of the romance because it moved too fast for me, I'd love to see what's next in store for Linc and Ven.

Overall, the general idea of Imitation is impressive. The writing is flawless and easy to get lost in. It's fast paced and would definitely keep you on edge. What I didn't like though is that nothing felt resolved in the end. Maybe it's Heather Hildenbrand's way of keeping her readers on their toes but to me the book just felt like it was missing something. Just when the book is reaching its climax, it ended! I expected at least three more chapters and it just ended! To have a book end that way is pure torture.
Imitation is a really good book that you could easily get hooked to. The ending left me with more questions than answers so I'll definitely be looking forward to reading the second book

Tour Stop: ONLY A KISS by Ines Bautista-Yao Review and Giveaway

Title: Only A Kiss
Author: Ines Bautista-Yao
Publisher: Chamber Shell Publishing
Date of Publication: November 29, 2014
Genre: contemporary romance

When she was nine-years-old, Katie knew she wanted Chris to give her her first kiss. It wasn’t because she was in love with him (no way, he was her best friend! Besides, she was in love with his fourteen-year-old big brother), it was because she could make him do anything she wanted.
Besides, it didn't really mean anything. It was only a kiss after all.
But then things started to change. They grew up. They parted ways and went to different high schools. And other girls and boys—well, just one particular boy—came into the picture, throwing their lives upside down.
Told from the alternating points of view of Katie and Chris, this love story between two best friends will tug at your heartstrings and leave you thinking how the simplest things can mean so much.

Book Excerpt:
But a few weeks later, while he was doing some groceries for his mom after school, something he actually enjoyed because he found it relaxing when there weren’t too many people, someone tapped him on the shoulder. “Haven’t been seeing you around.” He turned to see Iris, looking absolutely adorable in a blue tank top, skinny jeans, and orange Chucks. She had a faded yellow headband on and somehow, it made her entire face light up. He didn’t know how or why, he just noticed that it did. And right then, he knew he was powerless against her. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were avoiding me.” She tilted her head to the side and looked up at him prettily. She knew she was cute, he realized. She knew he liked her. And he didn’t care. She was talking to him, wasn’t she? Did that mean she liked him too?

Book Review:
Rating: 3 of 5 stars
I am a big romantic at heart so when I read the blurb of Only A Kiss I immediately jumped on the opportunity to read it. This is my first time to read a book by the author so I wasn't sure what to expect but I'm glad I gave this book a shot because I ended up really liking it.

Katie is a likable protagonist. She was kinda bossy when she was a kid but she's just as passionate and I really liked that about her. She feels things strongly and she goes after whatever she wants. I admire her strength and her stubbornness to not give up easily. I found it odd though that her nine year old self is thinking about who she's going to marry someday. I mean she's nine! When I was that age the only thing on my mind was cartoons and video games and when asked what I wanted to be when I grow up I answered back "I want to be a nurse." (Turns out I'm terrified of blood so there goes that dream) But anyway, I still liked her. I am a big fan of happily ever afters so I can relate with Katie's fascination with marriage. There is something magical in knowing that you've found the one person you would want to spend the rest of your life with.
Chris on the other hand is the opposite of Katie. He's gentle and soft-spoken. He's far on my list of top fictional boyfriends but I must admit I admire his protective and understanding personality.
I love reading about Katie and Chris' adventures, fallouts, romantic encounters and mishaps. They grew up together and did almost everything together. They tell each other everything. They are each other's firsts. They're bestfriends in every sense of the word.

The book is divided into chapters alternating between both of the main characters' POVs starting from when they were nine until they turned to adults. I think this fits perfectly with the story. It makes you understand the how and the why of things. It clearly showed what kind of history and relationship Katie and Chris have and the reason why they act the way they do. It gave their relationship depth and made it more real.

Only A Kiss is a typical story of two bestfriends who, in the end, realized that the one person they would love like nothing else has been in front of them all along. I am rarely a fan of bestfriends turned lovers story but this book, surprisingly, I really enjoyed. The plot isn't exactly unique but the execution was amazingly done. The characters were well-developed, there was no insta-love (NO to insta-love) and the story was believable.
Only A Kiss is sweet, fun and a wonderful story of two people who found love where they least expected it.

I received an e-arc to read and review.

BOOK REVIEW
Rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Catching Kind is a typical story of a nerdy, introvert girl and a cocky jock who pretends to be in a romantic relationship and ends up falling for each other. The story is predictable and not exactly unique but I'm a sucker for really sweet and romantic contemporary that I absolutely LOVE it. This is one of those books where you know from the start who's going to end up with who but you just have to know the how. And that's exactly what I did. And I love every second of it.

Hailey Tate is a writer. She's also sweet, funny and sassy. I love seeing her come out of her shell throughout the book. She was introduced as a quiet, shy person who never argues with anyone except with her closest friends and I was afraid she's going to be that girl who turns out to be unbearably shy and afraid of confrontations and ends up being unlikable. Fortunately that wasn't the case. She turned out to be a strong and independent heroine who stands by her beliefs and I admire that about her. I especially love seeing her argue with Connor. Their flirty and playful banter is way too funny to not love.

Connor freakin' Ryan. He's a professional baseball player who throws balls that defy gravity, a womanizer and secretly a guy with a heart of gold. He's not exactly the bad boy type with a dark past. Aside from his playboy image, he's actually really sweet, gentle, smart and fun to be with. I. Am. In. Love. (Be still my beating heart)

"There's not a lot of sleeping involved when I stay over my girlfriend's house."

I love the dynamic between Hailey and Connor. They complement each other so perfectly I don't think I've ever met a couple more perfect than them. They're humorous and absolutely adorable together. There was no insta-love so I really enjoyed the slow build to the romance and I was like "What is wrong with you two?! Get together and have babies already!" for the most part of the book.

'Because when you didn't realize how deep you were in, you could only fall further.'

I cannot tell you enough how amazing this book is! I love the dialogue, the characters (both main and secondary) and the brilliant writing that felt flawless and engaging. The only complain I do have is that frustrating ending. I need one more chapter! I cannot believe that's the end for Hailey and Connor. No. Just NO.

I've never read a book by Caitie Quinn and I'm very excited to learn that this book is a part of a series. I guess I'll go ahead and stalk her in all her social media from now on.

I highly recommend The Catching Kind to everyone (especially those who loved Jenny Jones' Save the Date as much as I did)!

I received an e-arc of the book from NetGalley to read and review. Quotes cited may change in the final print.
